How to choose running shoes

When looking for a good quality pair of running shoes there are a number of things you sohuld take into consideration:

1. Portability

If you’re taking your running shoes away on business or holiday then you need to make sure they are portable and fit easily into your case. Also be sure that your shoes are lightweight and breathable as you could even wear them on the flight.

2. Comfort

When running comfort is key, it’s recommended that you should buy your shoes 1/2 to a full size bigger than your foot measurement, this is because your feet swell and expand when running.

3. Cushioning

For added comfort and for an enhanced running experience take a look at how much cushioning each shoe provides. The shoes cushioning will lessen the impact with each step.

4. Enough toe room

As mentioned before your feet swell and lengthen as you run, so make sure there’s around a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the end of your shoe. If there’e enough room to wiggle them around than you’re on to a winner.

5. Don’t put ‘looks’ first

Yes, you want to look good, we all do, but try to find a balance between style and quality. Try not to be swayed by how the shoe looks. Make sure you check the specifications and quality of the running shoe and make sure it’s built to last.

6. Don’t buy cheap

Normally cheap running shoes are too good to be true. They’re often poorly made with low quality materials and generally won’t last you very long. I would always recommend paying a little bit more and getting a high quality pair that are built to last. You will save money in the long run and overall have a better running experience.

Running Shoes FAQ

There are a number of reasons why you should consider buying a proper running shoe over a normal shoe. Firstly a good running shoe can help prevent injury and make your run feel a lot easier and lighter. They provide extra cushioning that a normal shoe doesn’t come close to. So a good pair of running shoes is a must if you are a serious runner or even a beginner. Here are just some of the main benefits of getting a good pair of running shoes:

  • Midsole Foot Cushioning
  • Arch Support
  • Injury Prevention
  • Improved Athletic Performance
  • Protection to your feet
  • Fixes overpronation & supination

According to some researchers your running shoes should ideally be replaced anywhere between 300 to 500 miles of their first wear. So if you are hooked up to a fitness app you should be able to check your miles count and get an idea of when to replace. However it’s always best to check your shoes, I think we all know when our shoes are done for! It’s best to replace sooner rather than later as running on poor or damaged shoes can lead to injury.

Without counting how many miles your shoes have done, here’s a few tell-tale signs when you know you need to buy your next pair:

  • The outer sole has worn
  • There is no traction or grip when running
  • The midsole feels to soft and isn’t stable under pressure
  • The heel is less supportive
  • Your toes start to pop out
  • If there are any tears in the shoe
  • Your shoe looks generally worn and battered
  • They don’t stand up straight on a flat surface

Ideally your running shoes should have a snug it and keep your feet locked in nicely. A tighter fit means you will stay more balanced and connected to your shoes when running around corners or tough terrains. You should leave some room for your toes and across the width of the shoe as your feet expand and swell when running. Most running shoes have a tighter fit than your standard shoes.

If you can measure you feet before you buy your shoes, then generally speaking add on another 1/2 to a full size to your foot size. The reason you why your running shoes should be 1/2 to a full size bigger is because your feet swell and expand when you run so you need plenty of room in your shoe to cater for this. The last thing you want is to be all crammed up in there and have squashed toes. This will help make your run comfortable and avoid any blisters.

If you’re looking for some inspiration to hit the roads and get running then here are some reasons to why you should lace up and start!

  • No gym sign up fees – it’s free!
  • You can run anywhere
  • Meet new friends
  • Make it your ‘me’ time
  • Makes you feel good
  • Track progress
  • Keep fit and healthy
  • Can improve your brain / memory
  • Reduces stress
  • Good for your heart & blood pressure
  • Can help you live longer

It depends on what what you mean by walking. If you are long distance walking such as rambling or hiking then no you shouldn’t wear running shoes for this. I would recommend you get a specific shoe for that activity.

Many walking shoes are designed for comfort wear rather than for long distance walking or fitness. When walking for fitness you don’t need all the cushioning that running shoes provide, which could lead to injury as they are designed for different purposes. However that said there is nothing stopping you wearing your running shoes for causal wear.

It all depends on what you are looking for, you need to consider things like:

  • How often will I be running
  • How long will I be running for
  • Where am I traveling to
  • Do I need to pack light
  • Am I flat footed
  • Do I need added support / cushioning

For me, personally I would always want something lightweight and breathable that I can wear with my causal clothes too. I would want added cushioning and protection for my feet. If I’m traveling they need to be packable and lightweight, so I would normally opt for the Adidas UltraBoost range as they are stylish too. It also depends how much you’re into your running and for me it’s a few times a week, if I’m lucky with having two young kids!

I always do most of my online shopping on Amazon, they have a wide selection and they are trusted world wide. I have never had any problem buying or returning items either which is great!

I hope you enjoyed reading our guide to the best running shoes for men and women. So if you love traveling or you’re away on business a lot and want to keep fit then these running shoes will help take your runs to the next level. I know for a fact I’m well overdue a new pair of running shoes 🙂
