Mosquitoes are my arch enemy! They just love me but I despise them! 10 years ago, I was bit by a spider in Cuba resulting in a horrific reaction. My leg blew up with bright red rings around the bite mark; it throbbed like crazy and felt extremely bruised very quickly.
That bite did something to me as now when I get bit I have the exact same reaction every time. My doctor has told me I am allergic to mosquito bites and that I need to seek medical attention as soon as I get bit! Not great when we love visiting topical destinations. Fast forward 10 years (and countless huge doctors’ bills) I have now finally found something to stop them pesky mosquitoes biting me! Jungle Formula max strength, containing Deet.

What is deet?
Deet has been my life saver and saved me getting bitten and expensive doctors’ bills. If you’ve ever used Deet you’ll know just how strong the smell is once sprayed! It’s an extremely strong chemical smell. I’m sorry girls but it’s pointless getting your nails done as deet will take that varnish and shellac straight off! It may also damage any type of synthetic clothing! I hear you thinking “that can’t possibly be safe to use on your skin then” but according to British scientists it is and its extremely effective, I can vouch for that.
Is deet safe for toddlers and young kids
There are guidelines on how much deet a child should be exposed too. In the occurrence where the benefit of applying a repellent such as Deet outweighs the dangers of not then Children between the ages of 6 months to 2 years should only apply one application of 10% or less of Deet. It is advised to seek medical advice before using if you are unsure of application.
Tips to avoid getting bitten by mosquitos
- Make sure you cover arms and legs with loose fitting clothing
- Avoid areas where mosquitoes swarm especially near pools of water, rubbish, compost and food.
- Reapply repellent at dawn and dusk when the mosquitoes are more active.
- Dress in plain non colourful clothing.
- Don’t wear perfume or scented deodorant, these attract the mosquitos
- Use 50% DEET for the most effective protection
- keep doors and windows closed
- Put a net around your bed.
- Always wear shoes outdoors
