Criteria for Evaluation & Buyers Guide

Here are the different factors you should consider in finding the diaper backpack:

USB Port

Having a USB port on your diaper backpack is extremely handy, you’ll be able to charge your phone on the go where ever you are or whatever you’re doing, from shopping to pushing your stroller.

The diaper bag or backpack will have a USB port usually located on the side. Which you’ll be able to insert your charging cable in to. Inside there will be a USB cable the then runs into a power bank like the Anker PowerCore (Amazon). Then you’ll have hours and hours of charge time on the move.

Get a good Power Bank

Having a good Power Bank inside your diaper bag like the Anker PowerCore (Amazon) will ensure you have plenty of battery to power your phone. Try to get a compact and lightweight Power Bank, as you don’t want to be weight down, as some are pretty heavy. You’ll have plenty of baby gear to fit in your bag so the last thing you want is for the space to be taken up by one of these.

Weight

When traveling especially, you’ll need to bring lots of baby gear with you, from spare clothes, baby formula to toys. So, try to get a lightweight diaper bag as you won’t be weighed down as much, which will help avoid potential back pain.

Insulated bottle pockets

Most diaper backpacks have at least one insulated bottle compartment, however, most now have two, and some even have three. I’d recommend looking for a bag that has a minimum of two. These compartments allow you to keep your babies milk at a warm temperature ready for them to drink.

They are time efficient and can be given to baby on the go but remember that if your makeup a feed to use it within 2 hours. You could on the other hand just add boiling water to the bottle an make up a feed on the go so it will last longer if your out for a while. They can also work the other way and keep things nice and cool.

Large storage area

It is essential to have a bag that will carry all of your baby’s items, not to mention your own. Most of us leave the handbag at home if we are using a diaper bag so make sure you factor in room for wallets, phones, laptops, etc.

Trust me it’s like packing for holidays when you leave the house with a baby so a spacious bag is essential so you can find what you need quickly.

Multi-functional carry options

Having different ways to carry your bag is also very important as you may, like me want to distribute the weight evenly on your back so a backpack diaper bag would be best. However, here are the different types of diaper bags:

  • Backpack
  • Over the shoulder
  • Carry handle
  • Using stroller hooks

Whatever your preference, you might want to consider getting a multi-fucntional diaper bag so you’re ready for all different occasions. For example, wearing it like a backpack might be useful if your going on a long walk or a small hike. Whereas you may wish to carry it over the shoulder if you’re at a party.

So, think about your lifestyle and get a diaper bag with different carry options.

Stroller hooks

If you’re getting tired of carrying your diaper bag, you might want to consider getting one that comes with convenient stroller hooks, these allow you to easily attach your diaper bag to your stroller. This also gives you easy access inside your diaper bag, rather than taking it off all the time or awkwardly reaching around.

Number of pockets

Having accessible pockets on the outside for the essentials like a baby wipe pocket will make life that little bit easier. Lots of internal pockets are also very important too, as you can separate items so you know exactly where to look when you may need them most.

Unisex

Another thing to consider would be getting a universal diaper bag that both mom and dad can use/wear, rather than buying one each. If you have a bright pink flower diaper bag, then dad might feel a little self-conscious.

Waterproof

Personally, I think this is a nice to have, however, it does help when you live in England like me, as it does nothing but rain here. A waterproof diaper bag will keep all your baby gear nice and dry, the last thing you want is for nappies and spare clothes to get damp. Even if you can get a bag that only has water-resistant areas, that’s better than nothing. Like I said though, if you live somewhere hot then this probably won’t be as important for you.

Quality of materials

Don’t buy cheap, a diaper bag is part of your everyday life and it comes everywhere with you, so make sure you get something that will last you. So don’t always try and grab a bargain, because chances are the quality will be inferior and it simply won’t last you.

We made this mistake and got a cheap one last minute when we took went on our first vacation with our eldest and it broke halfway through the holiday. Since then, we always pay that little bit more and get a high-quality one. So far, touch wood, this hasn’t happened since.

Why get a diaper bag with USB ports?

There are many reasons why you should consider getting a diaper backpack with USB functionality.

Reminder: Not only can you charge your phone externally outside your diaper bag, but you can also charge it while it’s zipped up securely inside your bag, this is a great anti-theft feature of USB diaper bags.

Anway, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages:

Pro’s

  • Charge your phone on the go
  • Easily accessible
  • Be ready with YouTube when a tantrum happens
  • Can charge from within your bag
  • Anti-Theft design

Con’s

  • Power Bank may weigh you down
  • Power Bank can take up space
  • External cable can get in the way

Final Thoughts

Personally, I think USB diaper bags are great, however, some may think it’s a bit of a fad. There are lots of positives to warrant having a USB port on your bag, as you never know when you might need a charged phone in case of an emergency.

This is the most important reason why I think you should have one, you just don’t know when you might need one. If you’re like me, I always forget to charge mine of a night!

To be honest, it’s not even expensive to have this feature, it’s affordable for all, so why not? It’s also extremely handy if you love traveling!

In summary look for:

  • Obviously USB ports
  • Large storage area
  • Lots of compartments
  • Quality materials
  • Multi-functional ways to carry.

So, that was my guide on the best diaper bags and backpacks with a USB charging port, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this post, if so please share with your friends and family!
