Here are my top tips for keeping safe and getting the most out of your hiking experience in Mauritius. In no particular order…
Hiking in blazing hot humid weather conditions, especially in Mauritius will soon tire you out. So, it’s important to drink lots of water before and during the hike. Be sure to take enough water with you, it might be worth getting a hydration backpack so you can drink on the go without having to route through your backpack all the time.
Invest in good hiking gear
A lot of the trails in Mauritius involve hiking over jagged and rough terrain or up steep slippery slopes. Therefore, you’ll need good quality hiking gear from hiking shoes, backpacks, and good quality trekking poles. I would also recommend taking a first aid kit too, especially if you’re not doing a guided tour.
Take enough sun cream
As previously mentioned it gets very hot in Mauritius, so make sure you apply plenty of sunscreen before you leave for your hike and take it with you so you can reapply. I would also recommend getting some UV protective sunglasses and a cap.
Get a tour guide
If you’re on vacation in Mauritius I would always recommend getting a tour guide. They will know the best routes to take, any hazards along the way but you’ll also learn all about nature, wildlife, and history along the way. If you’re planning on doing any strenuous hikes or off the beaten path trails then you should definitely consider a guide.
Choose the right trail for you
If you’re a beginner and not used to hiking or you’re not fit, then you should avoid trying to do the moderate to difficult hikes. Stick to the beginner level hikes and flat terrains and you’ll have so much more fun. I would recommend doing a few hikes and getting fit before you go away so you can move up a level while on vacation.
Start the hike early (not as hot)
Try to start your hike early in the morning when the sun is not at its hottest. This way you won’t be as tired and you’ll walk that little bit further and have more energy for that final ascent to the summit in the late morning. That said, always check the weather beforehand and stay in the shade where possible.
Get fit before you go
Find out what trails you’d really love to do online months before you go. If they are moderate to difficult and you’re only at a beginner level, this gives you a chance to prepare! Build up your fitness, go on regular walks before you go away and gradually increase the difficulty. This will stand you in good stead for your trip.
Tell someone where you’ll be
Leave a note or text with someone close to you. You never know what could happen, if things do go wrong or you get lost, people will know where you are. Make use of technology too, let people know where you’re going and so they can track you on apps like Find my friends.
Check the weather
Always check the weather before you go hiking, especially in Mauritius. With its lush green rainforests there can be heavy downpours of rain which make some of the terrains on the trails dangerously slippy and not safe. This is why I’d recommend getting a guide as they will keep you updated on all this important information.
Research the trail before you go
It’s good to research your trails before you go, as you’ll know what to expect and you can then prepare accordingly, from hiking gear, fitness levels and also mentally. This will put you in good stead for the trails in Mauritius as you’ll be fully prepared.
